Just recently Leanne Haywood of Electrified Cutting Horses imported a Quarter Horse colt from America. We decided to catch up with Leanne to find out what it was like to import one of the best cutting bred Quarter Horse colts to ever hit Australian shores...
Electrified Cutting Horses was established in 2006 when Leanne fell in love with the sport after finding her perfect horse Too Smart To Spin a fully trained cutting mare. After getting hooked playing the breeding game with her mares and having little to no success with embryo transfer, Leanne decided to purchase her own stallion with her search taking her the origins of Cutting and Quarter Horses, America.
Leanne says she was looking for a stallion that was extremely well bred and worth importing into Australia and had always dreamed of owning a blue roan. It was at the Weatherford Futurity sales in Texas America where she says she found ‘her boy’ Ima Smooth Blue Cat, ‘he just stood out in term of bloodlines and was a rare blue roan, his Dam Autumn Boon is a great cutting mare out of the best cutting mare in America, Royal Blue Boon. His sire Smooth As A Cat is a great performance stallion in his own right whose sire Highbrow Cat is legendary.’ According to Leanne progeny from both these bloodlines are currently having a major impact on the sport of cutting in America, ‘these bloodlines are highly sort after in America as they are winning everything, he also has a beautiful kind nature and is just so quiet!’.
Leanne eventually purchased her dream stallion for no less than $150,000 US. At 2 yrs old he was at a perfect age to start a promising career in Australia in the sport of cutting which is Leanne’s passion, thus began the daunting task of importing a horse into Australia.Ima Smooth Blue Cat was required to be in quarantine for three weeks before being flown to Australia where he will also be in quarantine for three weeks on arrival. Leanne says due to the outbreak of EI a few years ago AQIS regulations have become quite stringent and rightly so, however the depot in Los Angeles was one of a few places not yet approved by AQIS to import from when Leanne began the process, but perseverance and determination eventually paid off.
When asked what the impact his genetics will have on the Australian Cutting Industry she replies, ‘the impact this horse will have....it will up the stakes in terms of breeding and performance. We will be in the same class as America....they will be coming over here to buy horses from Australia!’ Ima Smooth Blue Cat will be on display in the Stallion Ally at the 2011 NCHA Tamworth Futurity then he will be going to the trainers where he will begin preparation for the 2012 Tamworth Futurity and from there begin his cutting career in Australia.
Ima Smooth Blue Cat will stand at Electrified Cutting Horses in NSW for the stud season at $2200 Inc GST and chilled semen will also be available. For her own breeding aspirations Leanne hopes to retain foals by Ima Smooth Blue Cat and her mare Too Smart To Spin and prepare them for future Tamworth Futurities. There is also the possibility of future progeny going up for sale at Tamworth Futurity sales. All inquiries are welcome.
