Vappu is a lovely 10 year old Thoroughbred gelding who is currently ridden by my 14 year daughter.
My eldest daughter has just stopped riding so her horse is being passed down to my middle daughter who now doesn't have time for 2 horses with her other sporting commitments.
We have plenty of space for Vappu so he will only go to a home we think is best suited to him, if none is found he will stay with us. I would prefer he is not sitting in the paddock being wasted though!
Vappu would be best suited to an experienced, confident older teen or adult who has had experience with or owned thoroughbreds before. He is not a beginners horse. He also needs a rider with soft hands as he does not like a strong contact.
Vappu has an amazing temperament. He is a pleasure to do anything with on the ground and he is my favourite to take out to events. He will stand tied to a float/ truck / yard with absolutely no issue at all.
Loads with ease, beautiful for farrier / vet / body worker / washing / saddling etc.
Absolutely no buck, rear, bolt, bite or kick.
He is best suited to regular work, 5 days if possible, and if he has days off in a row, he will need an extended warm up to get out any silliness.
(His silliness involves being speedy and throwing his head around, nothing more sinister than that)
He is currently ridden up to 4 days a week and with this work load he doesn’t require the extra warm up time.
When we got Vapour he had mainly done some show jumping with a few outings training XC.
The passed 6 mths Sylvee has been eventing him 65cm and last couple of events 80cm.
He does still need work in the XC phase, if eventing was something his new owner was wanting to do, I would suggest a few XC training days to get him more experienced there.
He needs his rider to be very confident on the XC and he can get speedy. (He has received a speeding fine before, however my daughter did not at any time feel she was in danger or could not pull him up, she was enjoying the ride!)
Vappu has a sensitive mouth. He prefers a longer rein and a rider with soft hands. He would not suit someone who tends to ‘yank’, especially after a jump as he gets quite upset by this. (Meaning he will tell you off by throwing his head around)
Vappu is a careful show jumper, he is a distance-dependent horse – he likes his rider to get him the right stride.
In saying that, in a jump off he seems to just ‘switch on’ and can take off from any angle necessary.
Vappu can be speedy in Showjumping (hence why he’s good at the jump
Offs) with a strong confident rider this would not be an issue to get in check.
This year Sylvee had been jumping him 80 and 90cm but she has jumped him up to 1.05cm.
Vappu competed with Sylvee at the 2025 National Insterschool Championships in Sydney in the 90cm to 105cm classes and combined training. He travelled amazing, no issues at all.
Like a lot of thoroughbreds, Vappu does not like a busy warm up arena. He doesn’t like horses racing up behind him, he gets spooked with this and can race forward out of fright.
For this reason Sylvee tends to stay away from these situations with him. He has never bucked or pigrooted.
For Showjumping he is ridden in a Hidz hood.
Vappu hasn’t done anymore dressage requirements then what is needed for the 80cm eventing dressage test, but I have know doubt with the right rider and regular flat work lessons he will improve greatly and go much further.
Vappu is maintained on 4cyte and body work 6 weekly to keep him performing at his best. He is shod 5 weekly when competing and has no feet issues. (He is currently barefoot)
He has no issues with soundness or any injuries.
For an OTT thoroughbred Vappu is getting into his prime age for competing, he definately has a lot more to give and with the right rider I have no doubt he will go far.
Vappu has a great over track but for this reason we keep bell boots on him as he has, on occasion, pulled a shoe off.
His previous owner was an experienced adult and someone like that would definitely get more out of him than a junior rider I feel as he has picked up a few bad habits which he may not have with a confident adult. (my personal opinion)
Retired from racing end of 2020 he is registered to compete in OTT classes. Also EA registered.
Vet checks welcome.
5 star home only for this fella, as he is loved dearly.
